If they build it, will you come?

I live in a small mountain town and the community is pondering this question. In simple terms: They want to build a new trail in the forest that will attract visitors and adventurers from near and afar, which could mean money and economic development. It’s a good idea but it’s not really that simple.

The bigger, more complex issue: Will it be enough? Are adventure-based tourists savvy? Do they demand more than just sweet single-track to roll tires or place one foot in front of the other? Must a destination present the whole package – good eats, great beats, relevant retail, and captivating culture? I think so. But examining an ambition that hinges on more than the sustainable use of land could be an interesting story. Thoughts?
